Overpass Green Infrastructure / Stormwater Project

This award-winning green infrastructure project and community amenity is at 940 W St. Paul Avenue below the underpass that spans the area between St. Paul Ave to Clybourn Street and 6th to 10th streets. It was transformed from an empty lot to an eco-space with neighborhood connecting trails in 2021.

In addition to a plaza, a snaking trail weaves under the interstate from W St. Paul Avenue to the street grid to the north. Bioswales with native plantings have the capacity to capture 293,000 gallons of stormwater from the interstate, filtering it before it flows to the Menomonee River and on to Lake Michigan.

This project was made possible by a public-private partnership with MMSD, the City of Milwaukee, and WisDOT.

Future

This site will have additional bike and pedestrian paths to make it easier for people to travel between the Menomonee Valley and the Near West Side.

With the help of Housing First, housing was found for people that lived in the encampment.
