One Milwaukee’s greatest natural treasures, the Milwaukee River Greenway stretches eight miles along Milwaukee River, beginning at the former North Avenue Dam and ending at Silver Spring Drive in Glendale.
Its 878 acres boast a wealth of nature, including wetlands, forests and deep river valley, all within close proximity to the city’s urban core.
The greenway owes its existence
to the Milwaukee River Greenway Coalition, a group of stakeholders with a shared mission to protect and enhance the Greenway’s ecological and recreational value.
In addition to developing a master plan
to guide the river’s renaissance, the coalition facilitated an agreement among the municipalities to use zoning to protect the “viewshed” – minimizing the visual impact of the surrounding city to create an immersive natural experience.
